Hey Ho Hootenanny. I’ve always loved modern roots-tinged Americana music — the stuff that sounds at once well-worn and forward-facing. Not too old-timey but not too beholden to trends. These days there’s no shortage of bearded crews that fit this bill but, for me, there’s always been something special about The Lumineers. Whatever that something is, it was on full display this warm night just outside their home base of Denver. Voices had just the right mix of rasp and brightness; guitars and strings sounded fantastic together; and all of the “whup”s and “hey”s slid easily off their cuffs. And this band has some great tricks for creating intimacy among arena-size crowds. The performance was all a bit too earnest for me — I like a bit of rock-star swagger with my hippie homebodies — but, like all Americana artists trying to please these older fan bases, their toeing a delicate line, and I respect how they managed such an entertaining show. I’ll continue to play the shit out of their albums … and I’d absolutely see them again. Setlist

Another Throwback The Lawn at Great Woods

For me and others growing up in Eastern Massachusetts, Great Woods Amphitheater in Mansfield — specifically its general-admission Lawn — was synonymous with summer. Many acts made Great Woods an annual summer tour stop, visits that became teen rites of passage. I’m talking Jimmy Buffett, Steve Miller Band and others for whom you had to buy tickets. Larger than life. The Killers have always held a special place in my family’s hearts: for my kids they’ve been a sing-along staple since their debut, and that debut was such a touchstone moment in Aida’s and my history of modern rock fandom. We don’t always all agree on our tastes in music but we could always agree on The Killers’ Hot Fuss. This Broomfield show was our third time seeing them live and their energy and musicianship was on point as ever. The stage set was monolithic — featuring huge neon signs reminiscent of their Vegas hometown — and frontman Brandon Flowers prowled all of it like the pro that he is. The thumping sound was full and loud, the guitar assault was full-on, and the confetti cannons covered everything in sight. The usual anthems were all there — “All These Things That I’ve Done,” “Human,” “Mr. Brightside” — but their latest and greatest, “The Man,” was, for me, the highlight. Year after year, this band gets invited to headline the world’s biggest festivals, regardless of what new music they may or may not be promoting at the time; this show, huge in both sound and spectacle, was a reminder of why that is and why they deserve it. Music a plenty. A good friend celebrated her birthday by inviting her squad to this show, a monster bill that featured Houndmouth, Sam Beam (Iron & Wine) and this band, who at the time were quickly becoming a favorite of Aida’s and mine. The music was perfect for the merry band that assembled: upbeat and bluesy songs about family, friendship and love, with feminine energy to spare. By the time The Head And The Heart came out the place was glowing. Their three vocalists wove in and out of some expert musicianship, making for a long set filled with surprises. The number of killer songs these guys play belies their small catalog, and they didn’t hold any back. I can’t wait to see them again. Setlist

Where’d you go? This was Aida’s and my second time seeing this terrific band at Red Rocks and this one was … just okay. They seemed uncomfortable onstage, and made the awkward vibe worse by breaking between-song silences with admissions that they’re no good at talking to the audience during shows. And those silences! The crowd was not into it. A shame since the band delivered a serviceable performance — albeit without founding member Josiah Johnson — that focused on the most celebratory moments of their album Signs Of Light and the best sing-alongs from throughout their catalog. Whatever … we’re seeing them again next summer and I’m confident that one will be a step back in the right direction, especially if they’re reunited with Josiah. Setlist

Back on track. This was the THATH show I had been waiting a while for. By this time the “Signs Of Light” songs had been seriously road-tested, the new line-up was really hitting its stride, and they had completely fallen in love with summer shows at Red Rocks. This was a warm night and the crowd was feeling as great as Aida and I were. We were all into it, and we were rewarded with a special encore appearance from Josiah Johnson, a founding member of the band who had been going through some brutal life issues and hadn’t played with them in years. Those three songs were a beautiful cap to an awesome night. Setlist

Swirly whirly rock. These guys were blowing up around the time they made it to Denver so the little Ogden Theatre was packed. In a few weeks their awesome “Currents” would earn them a Grammy nomination, but for now, they were happy to smoke what must have been tubs full of Colorado green and smile along with fans for a spacey good time. I mean, these guys were so baked they could barely open their eyes or look up from their instruments, but what they lacked in delivery they made up for in creation, building a set of danceable psych rock heavy on synthesized keyboards, effects-laden guitars and trippy visuals (at one point Kevin turned to the backdrop and “played” a projector connected to his guitar). And you really can’t go wrong when you’ve got a song like “Let It Happen” to open with. I loved that and every second that followed, cherishing what would probably be the last time I’d see them in such a small venue. Setlist

Upbeat and cocksure. I absolutely love these North Carolina troublemakers so I can’t present an unbiased review of their live show. And this was my first time seeing them as headliners — not openers for other favorite bands — so I was doubly psyched. I’m assuming the rest of the assembled were in my same boat because people were going crazy for every note; Amelia had every soul eating out of her hand. She prowled the stage with a confidence I look for in my rock stars, and Nick did a killer job enabling her with his beats. I’m typically not a fan of music-by-laptop but these two make it work completely. The new material off What Now held its own alongside older favorites, each working the crowd into a sweaty froth. The stage set was cool, too, like a neon spaceship pulsing to the rhythm of the music. It was a perfect show for a stuffy theater and I couldn’t have been happier down on the floor to soak it all in. Tight as shit. By now these guys are a well-oiled machine. Frontman Britt Daniel struts the stage with more and more command every time I see him. Skronky and indulgent. Look, Billy Corgan can do whatever the fuck he wants—it’s his band—but I do expect some level of audience catering if I buy a ticket. Not a hits show, just the stuff he knows we like. No one in this audience was asking for the aimless, 20-minute Pink Floyd cover we got toward the end of this show, or any of the other sub-par, post-Machina originals. It was saved by the terrific guitar crunch and the thrill of finally seeing one of my most beloved rock drummers, Jimmy Chamberlain, live for the first time, but I’ll never again buy a ticket to see these Pumpkins.
