Bouncy, crazy energy. I got obsessed with Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix on the strength of its radio hits and immediately dove into its back catalog. What a band! I adore these guys. Such great mixtures of guitar, synths and vocals (even though I have no idea what these frogs are saying half the time). The drummer is an absolute animal, rarely sitting down during the entire 2-hour set. The crowd was mental for it. And they did a great job mixing up the arrangements, especially during a molasses-slow “Everything Is Everything” with only Thomas’ voice and Christian’s acoustic guitar. Setlist

Another Throwback Phish ’92-’93

In my humble opinion, Phish were at the peak of their mind-blowing powers around the time of this show. I’m sure they were reading one another’s minds when they played; how else could four players be so synchronized while playing such complex material? And the songs were getting better every album cycle. I would go on to see many more Phish shows over many more tours but this early-nineties period was … When treating erection problem with kamagra, one still needs to improve his habits and lifestyle. sales cialis In some cases it may be necessary to take the pill three or four times before it works for cheap cialis you in some cases. Welcome to Dick’s. After a long time away from this crew I was able to help christen Phish’s annual residency at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park just outside Denver, in which the opening 5 seconds of Trey’s guitar, Mike’s bass, Page’s keys and Fish’s drums reminded me how much I love these guys. Seriously, I lost myself in absolute bliss the second they started, as though it hadn’t been a dozen years since I’d seen them last. It didn’t hurt that these guys still play like motherfuckers — and the set list was incredible (all songs starting with “S” including “Split Open And Melt”) — but if I’m being honest it wouldn’t have mattered. I was just happy to be back in the crowd. Setlist

Phenomenal tour finale. Wow. Just … wow. I barely knew or recognized half of the songs played this night. “Buffalo Bill,” “Sugar Shack” and, apparently a thing, “Meatstick,” were all welcome surprises for me. And some of my old favorites — “Back On The Train” and “Also Sprach Zarathustra” included — showed up in peak form. As with most Phish shows I’ve attended, you didn’t need to be a card-carrying fan to enjoy the mind-boggling work onstage. Everything’s so expertly played to such an adoring crowd that it’s hard not to get caught up in it all. And I did, at no time more than a frenzied and breathless “First Tube” to end the night, the tour, and any doubts about the power these guys can wield onstage. Setlist

Hello, old phriends! A business trip serendipitously dropped me into NYC on Night 4 of the band’s Baker’s Dozen run at Madison Square Garden. Despite letting my Phan status lapse long ago, I had to go. I’m glad I did. The experience reminded me why I fell in love with Phish shows in the first place: face-melting musicianship, a light show without equal, and the energy of the best fans in the world. My Baker’s Dozen night theme was “Jam-Filled” and boy was it. Proof point: I got the longest song played in tour history — “Crosseyed & Painless” (a favorite of mine!) coming in at over 33 minutes. If that sounds horrible to you then you would’ve hated this show. The music was insanely good — they’re at the top of their game at this point — but the real takeaway for me was simply being there and basking in those familiar feelings of euphoria and respect and curiosity. It rekindled my interest in attending Phish shows (see Phish, Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, 9/3/17 caught just a month later) and reminded me that, even after all this time, Phish are the best live act on the planet. Sexy blood-boiler. Modern rock is lousy with guitar-plus-keyboard, woman-fronted duos — Sleigh Bells, Beach House and Purity Ring stand out for me — but that doesn’t mean they can’t get you excited. These two New York-based troublemakers have been tweaking the formula for a while now … and always give fans plenty of opportunities to see their road show. And what a show. They came out like bulls in a china shop and never let up: bass crunch shaking your bones; live and electronic drums spilling your drink; all delivered with high-kicks and lit by lasers and strobes. Even their newest power-ballad, “Destroyer,” was sung by sexpot frontwoman Sarah while in a 10-foot-tall, smoke-breathing costume out of an alien battle fantasy. The band’s third album, heavy on danceable beats and collaborator Big Boi’s hip-hop influence, was released just days before, so its songs occupied much of the setlist. The crowd was feeling all of it, shaking their asses to material old and new. This show fell on my concert buddy William’s birthday so his celebratory energy fueled an already charged night. I was exhausted by the end of it. Setlist

Intimate and plucky. While there are plenty of artists like him, Peter Bradley Adams’ searching lyrics and precocious melodies are unique. So when this singer-songwriter — one of Aida’s favorites — announced a Denver date in a tiny club close to our house, we got tickets. He’s got a large fanbase of mostly middle-aged women swooning over his man-bun and his songs about finding the right lady, and they were well-represented at this show. For me, it was all a bit tame, lacking any moment of complete abandon or passion; no moment where you felt like you were watching a man who would DIE if he didn’t get his story out to the world. It made me value opener Molly Parden: she opened the show and dueted with the headliner for a few songs, and brought an entertaining and self-deprecating humor to her banter and Peter-teasing.

Time to dance! Despite the guitars and other live instrumentation, this was way more of a dance show than I thought it would be. That’s not a knock — it was sweaty and happy and tons of fun — I just never thought of these guys as anything like EDM. The younguns around me were partying like they were, though, and brought a celebratory energy not usually seen at the hipster rock shows I frequent. It was a refreshing and pleasant surprise I hope to experience again. Setlist

A pleasant surprise. This band is one of the few that my entire family can listen to and enjoy together. They’re local favorites (founding members met at high school here in Colorado) so I got us tickets to what I hoped would be high-energy show for an enthusiastic home crowd. We got that and a whole lot more. Frontman Ryan Tedder is a gifted talent for whom showmanship and charisma come naturally, and his band was incredible. Zach Filkins is a gifted multi-instrumentalist, toggling between workmanlike guitar chops, beautiful flamenco picking and unexpected texture on viola; Brent Kutzle stayed busy crushing it in equal measures on electric bass and gorgeous cello; and Drew Brown astounded on lead guitar. Despite the show’s well-choreographed production value and elaborate stage sets, Tedder managed to keep things fresh. His between-song banter is charming, and he’s written enough hits — for his day band and for other megastars — to pepper his sets with left-field gems. The guy’s a machine: his muscular voice never wavered, even while running around the stage or, at one point, through the adoring crowd. I figured this show would be a fine family distraction for a Saturday night; I never predicted it would be one of my favorite shows of that summer. Setlist
