Larger than life. The Killers have always held a special place in my family’s hearts: for my kids they’ve been a sing-along staple since their debut, and that debut was such a touchstone moment in Aida’s and my history of modern rock fandom. We don’t always all agree on our tastes in music but we could always agree on The Killers’ Hot Fuss. This Broomfield show was our third time seeing them live and their energy and musicianship was on point as ever. The stage set was monolithic — featuring huge neon signs reminiscent of their Vegas hometown — and frontman Brandon Flowers prowled all of it like the pro that he is. The thumping sound was full and loud, the guitar assault was full-on, and the confetti cannons covered everything in sight. The usual anthems were all there — “All These Things That I’ve Done,” “Human,” “Mr. Brightside” — but their latest and greatest, “The Man,” was, for me, the highlight. Year after year, this band gets invited to headline the world’s biggest festivals, regardless of what new music they may or may not be promoting at the time; this show, huge in both sound and spectacle, was a reminder of why that is and why they deserve it. Peace and music. Mere feet from the rail. Lots of fans flying in from all over the country to take in these, some of the last shows being played by this band this decade. Deep cuts like “Knot Comes Loose”; white whales like “Aluminum Park”; extended jams like Carl’s “Carried Away”. Beer flowing. Smiles everywhere. Posters purchased; glitter and costumes. A twenty-piece disco ball monolith hanging from the ceiling, melting faces. It’s My Morning Jacket and I’m with my friends to take in the first night of a three-night New Years Eve run. Life is good. Confident and catchy. There’s something refreshing about seeing a scruffy old guy do whatever the fuck he wants in front of an arena full of hipsters. That was James Murphy working the stage this night: letting his fat belly poke out from under his button-down shirt while singing away his mid-life crises. He hit the high notes. He bantered about the absurdity of rockstar etiquette. And all while promoting a (fantastic) album he claimed he was never going to make. I can’t not love this guy. Nor can I imagine him playing with a different group of musicians, not while watching them playfully tease each other giggling onstage. The music is catchy as hell, played fast and without flaw. New songs “Oh Baby” and “Call The Police” were standouts in a set of near-perfect selections. I’m a fan for life. Setlist

jaw-dropping gorgeousness. I’ve loved The King Of Limbs on disc but was always curious about how the songs would work live. I got my answer at this mind-blowing show that featured an extra percussionist and trippy stage set. The songs had a swagger you could actually dance to, which was good because my buddy Brian and I were well-positioned in the pit mere feet from Ed. The set was solid, the crowd was hopping and the boys were in a rockin’ mood. Setlist
